For the first time in its history, the town of Tyrone will consider a $6 million budget in June.
Town Manager Barry Amos said the first public hearing on the budget is June 7 and will not require a millage rate hike. But the town will not be able to rollback the rate, which is a fate many other local governments are also facing.
The budget is about 6.5 percent more than last year, and includes adding two police officers, a part-time code enforcement officer, a town engineer, an accountant, along with a maintenance worker, and two positions at the town’s new library.
Expenditures for the library include $1.6 million for construction and $264,000 for operation. Amos said this year’s operating costs were $181,000.
The town also has included $31,000 in the budget for the annual Founder’s Day celebration. Last year, some members of the Town Council questioned whether it was suitable for government to fund the festival, but Amos said everyone was OK with the expenditure this year.
The town is expected to approve the budget at its June 21 meeting.
