The Level 5 Gym South gymnastics team traveled to the Cobb Parks and Recreation Center for the Cobb Candy Cane Gymnastics Meet on Nov. 12. The girls took third place out of 13 teams, hanging tough with some of the best teams in the state.

Individually, they placed first in 9 categories. Leading the pack was Shayla Moore. She placed first on vault, bars, floor and All-Around. Her score of 36.6 for All-Around was the highest of the year. Kirstie Barkoot also took first place on beam, floor and All-Around. So far this year, she has placed first or second in the All-Around in four out of the five meets they have competed in. Kathryn Woodruff had her highest scores of the year on vault, beam, floor, and All-Around with scores of 8.75, 9.526, 9.05, and 35.075 respectively. Lauren Spier also had a season high All-Around with a 36.725, good enough for a second place finish. Spier also had the highest score of the meet with a 9.55 1st place finish on bars. Shamira Johnson also placed well, scoring a 9.1 on floor and another season best All-Around of 34.475.

The coaches feel that the girls are peaking just in time for their state meet, which took place last weekend. Over 40 teams competed in this year’s meet.

Gym South's Level 6 girls gymnastics team concluded their season at the Roswell Parks and Recreation Nov. 19 and 20. There were over 20 teams and 200 girls in this year's state meet. The team was just out of reach of the top 12 and barely missed out on advancing to the team finals. The state meet counts the top four scores on each event, and with only four girls on the team, everyone had to hit every routine in order to have a chance.

Despite missing out on finals, there were some excellent finished individually. All of the girls had a season best score on at least one event. Leading the way was Tori Kinamon, with a season best 9.425 on vault and a 35.425 in the All-Around. Tori was fourth on vault, eighth on bars, fifth on floor, and 10th All-Around. Kaitlin Barkoot also had a season best on beam with an 8.45, and a 12th place finish. Her All-Around of 33.9 equaled her previous best. Kaycee Bunn had her highest bars score of the year with an 8.65 and an eighth place finish. Alexis Salvanera also had season highs on vault, beam, and All-Around scoring 8.35, 9.025, and 33.8 respectively.
