AMERICAN LEGION HOSTS TRADITIONAL MEMORIAL DAY CEREMONY

The American Legion Fayette County Post 105 will be hosting a traditional county-wide Memorial Day Ceremony, remembering the service and sacrifice of America's military heroes on Monday, May 28.

The observance of Memorial Day has it's roots following the Civil War in many communities across the nation, gathering to decorate the graves of both Union and Confederate dead. Today, all veterans are so honored.

Special guest speakers will include Georgia State Senator Ronnie Chance, Fayetteville Mayor Ken Steele, Major General Ted Mallory (Ret. USAFR), Fayetteville Historian John Lynch, and Colonel Ed Sherwood (Ret. USA).

Assisting in the ceremony will be members of the Sons of the American Revolution Musket Detail, Whitewater High School Brass Ensemble, and Boy Scouts from Troops 309 and 279.

All residents of Fayette County are invited to attend and asked to bring their own lawn chairs. Members of the American Legion will provide limited seating for senior citizens. Parking will be in the Board of Education parking lot.

In the event of bad weather, the Memorial Day Ceremony will be held in the American Legion Log Cabin, across from the Fayette County Heritage Park Fountain, at 180 South Glynn Drive in Fayetteville.

The location will be the historic Fayetteville City Cemetery, next to the Fayette County Board of Education Building, on Georgia Highway 54 beginning at 11:00 a.m.
