After months of discussion and debate, Tyrone’s comprehensive plan will be sent to state officials for approval.

But the decision to transmit the plan was not without debate, as town planner Jonathan Lewis came under fire during Thursday night’s Town Council meeting.
“I’m just not real satisfied with it,” said Councilman Grace Caldwell.

Councilman Gloria Furr alluded to the 19 changes given to the citizen’s committee, but not provided the Council until this week.

Lewis said the comprehensive plan serves as a guide to future development, but there is nothing that makes the Town Council follow it to the letter.

Caldwell had a problem with an area in the plan that called for high density development near the town’s center.

“People do not want high density development in downtown,” she said.

Lewis explained that it meant relatively higher density compared to the surrounding area, but said he could change the wording to a “mix of residential and commercial development.

The planner also explained that during the summer, town people would still be able to offer input, and the plan could be tweaked after the state signs off on the proposal.
“It just seems to me that there’s a difference between what the people wanted and some of what’s in the plan,” Caldwell said.

Still, the Town Council voted unanimously to send the plan to the state agencies.
