Tyrone plan adoption is premature

This Thursday, May 17, the Tyrone Council is being asked to vote on accepting a comprehensive plan that will guide future changes to Tyrone for the next 20 years.

Planning ahead is good. Without proper planning and direction, businesses, towns and cities would develop in manners that could prove to be detrimental to their well-being.

However, to develop a long-range plan without being able to rely on basic premise, ordinances, and laws seems futile.

Until decisions are reached as to whether additional sewage capacity for downtown Tyrone will be found (the Tyrone citizens stated that they did not want to fund further sewage), whether the Tyrone/Palmetto Road will be widened to four lanes (currently being opposed by the town management but in Fayette County’s long-range plan), whether smaller lots and higher density is coming (the citizens voted against this), and whether our green spaces will be protected, it seems that a vote to adopt a comprehensive plan may be premature.

If and when these issues are resolved or at least a consensus reached, perhaps that would be the time to vote and adopt a comprehensive plan that will serve Tyrone and its citizens well for years to come.

The Tyrone Council will be meeting Thursday at 7 p.m. Come and show your interest in the town and its future.
