Crisscrossing traffic in Fayetteville: Here’s another solution to problemTue, 05/15/2007 - 4:44pm
By: The Citizen
It has been proposed to crisscross east- and west-bound traffic on Ga. Highway 54 through downtown Fayetteville. My understanding is that the biggest concern was for traffic heading east on Hwy. 54 wanting to turn north on Ga. Highway 85. Another proposal I would like to suggest would be to make all traffic one-way around our historic downtown Fayetteville. This type of traffic flow seems to be working in at least McDonough and Thomaston. I’m sure there are more towns throughout Georgia that have similar traffic flows. I admit that I don’t know the volume of traffic these towns see daily and would suspect Fayetteville would have a higher rate. The proposal would be as follows: East and west Hwy. 54 traffic would NOT be affected; they are already divided and one way. Convert Jeff Davis from Jordan’s Salvage to the light at Hwy. 85 (IHOP) into only NORTH-bound traffic and convert Hwy. 85 from the light at Ga. Highway 92 (Hudson Plaza) south to the old courthouse one-way SOUTH. If you were heading north on Hwy. 85 south of town, you would have to turn right at the old courthouse to Jordan’s Salvage and turn left on Jeff Davis to continue heading north. Traffic on the Post Office road and the remaining connecting roads between Jeff Davis and Hwy. 85 would remain the same. Let’s not try a new approach which has the potential of greater confusion to traffic just passing through. Let’s not add two more stop lights at the east and west entrances into Fayetteville for this cross-over or crisscross. We have plenty of traffic lights as it is now and we will keep on getting more with this “planned growth” we all cherish. Hauke Van Gunst Fayetteville, Ga. login to post comments |
