Sandy Creek math teams add up awards

The Sandy Creek Junior Varsity and Varsity Math Teams have been accumulating some wins over the last few months.

On March 30, the Sandy Creek Varsity Math Team had the opportunity to participate in the 36th annual Math Day program at the University of West Georgia. The competition consisted of four tests that challenged the students' mathematical ability in Algebra II, Geometry, Advanced Math, and Calculus. Trophies were awarded to the students with the top three scores on each test and the top three teams overall.

The Sandy Creek team placed first overall in the tournament. The students that participated in the event were (back row from left to right) David Desprez, Ayrton Bryan, Anisha Tajani, (2nd row from left to right) Sarah Preston, Becky Tobias, Angela Reames, Alysha Kaba, Young Kim, Ravi Dayabhai, Kunj Pandya, (1st row from left to right) Matt Goss, Jaemin Sung, Tyler Wright, Ashley Ellis, Emily Desprez, and Emily Goss.

Individually, Emily Desprez took home the second place trophy, and Matt Goss placed in the top five on the Geometry test. Sung received a second place trophy, Bryan received the third place trophy, and Tajani placed in the top five on the Algebra II test. Individually, on the Advanced Math test, Wright received the second place trophy, David Desprez and Pandya placed in the top five. The Calculus students swept the awards for Calculus. Ellis placed first, Emily Goss placed second, Dayabhai placed third, and Kim placed in the top five.

On March 31, eight Junior Varsity members went to Woodward Academy to compete in the State Math Tournament. Due to their dedication, the team became the Division AAA Junior Varsity State Champions. Individually, Anisha Tajani placed first overall in Division AAA.
