For the fourth consecutive year in its five-year history, the Air Force Junior ROTC (AFJROTC) Unit at Sandy Creek High as been designated a Distinguished Unit.

The unit is one of only 32 to receive the award out of 869 units across the nation and at selected schools in Europe, the Pacific and Puerto Rico. This award recognizes AFJROTC units that have performed above and beyond normal expectations and that have distinguished themselves through outstanding service to their school and community while meeting the Air Force Junior ROTC mission of producing better citizens for America.

The award focuses on cadet goals that were established at the start of the 2006-07 school year. These goals focus on completing projects related to the local community, school and cadets. The cadets in the AFJROTC program at Sandy Creek help develop the goals and work on accomplishing them during the school year.

Senior Aerospace Science Instructor Colonel Douglas Pearson and Aerospace Science Instructor Chief Master Sergeant Mark Davidson provide the oversight and direction for the cadets in their efforts to complete a successful year.

“This award means a lot because it recognizes a team effort and is an award all the cadets can share. Our unit is especially proud to be able to maintain this tradition of excellence,” says Pearson.

The objectives of the Junior ROTC program are to educate and train high school cadets in citizenship and life skills; promote community service; instill responsibility, character and self-discipline through character education and to provide instruction in air and space fundamentals. Enrollment is open to all young people who are in the 9th grade or higher, physically fit and are citizens or nationals of the United States.
