Burch students donate their hair to charity

When it comes to helping others, some people give their time while others donate items or money but students, parents and staff at Robert J. Burch chose to give something very personal – their hair.

The school participated in a “Cut-A-Thon” to collect hair for Wigs for Kids, a nonprofit organization that makes wigs for children who have lost their hair due to illness and/or medical treatment. A total of 190 inches of hair was donated with each participant agreeing to cut off a 10-inch ponytail.

The Burch Elementary donation will come close to making one wig; it takes approximately 20-30 ponytails to construct a hairpiece for a child.

“We are extremely proud of the Wigs for Kids participants who represented our school. They have experienced one of life’s most precious gifts, the gift of giving,” says teacher Vicki Bruns.

The Cut-A-Thon was held on April 22 at the NV Hair Studio in Peachtree City.

In addition to helping children with hair loss, students have been busy helping the school’s Relay for Life team raise money for cancer prevention, research and patient support with student initiated events such as a school social and Relay for Life benefit pageant.
