Communities unite to build home for local woman

Folks from Tyrone and surrounding communities are banning together to help one of their own. Their efforts are resulting in a home under construction for Tyrone resident Susan Parrott.

Located across from Carden’s Glass on Senoia Road, the home is being built under the combined direction of First Baptist Church of Tyrone, Fairburn Baptist Association and Southern Crescent Habitat for Humanity. Materials are being donated and construction work performed by church members and area businesses.

“We’re having 20 or more people helping on the weekends and five or six during the weekdays. A lot of stuff has been donated and some has been bought at cost. But we still need more materials and labor,” said project volunteer Bunkey Thompson. “This is helping Susan Parrott. It’s a worthwhile thing and it’s good that you can get so many people together to help somebody.”

The decision to build a new home for Emma and Susan Parrott came in 2006 after their existing home, located on the same site, was found to have a number of safety concerns. The old house was demolished in February.

“Last year a decision was made and action taken to build a house for Emma Parrott and her daughter Susan. In August 2006, inspections were made and a small amount of asbestos was found. It was a lengthy process to find and hire a state-certified environmental agency to properly remove and dispose of the asbestos,” said First Baptist Pastor Farren Roper. “During this time, on January 12, Ms. Emma passed away, leaving Susan, a citizen of our community and a member of this church, in need of a safe home.”

Thompson said additional help from others in the community would be appreciated. Those interested in assisting with the donation of materials or construction help should contact Bunkey Thompson at (770) 616-0006 or First Baptist Church of Tyrone at (770) 487-4385.
