Sandy Creek’s varsity wrestling team had a tough test last Tuesday. The team traveled to Union Grove and took on the Wolverines, as well as Marist and Woodward Academy. All three of those teams are ranked in the pre-season GaSports.com poll. Union Grove is ranked ninth in AAAAA, while Woodward is ranked fifth and Marist is ranked seventh in AAAA.

The Patriots went 0-3 on the night. They lost to Union Grove 48-24, fell to Marist 45-33 and lost to Woodward 58-6. Only Alex Willis-Cruz (145)and Travis Cooper (171) went 3-0 on the night.

Sandy Creek has five freshmen wrestling varsity this year and Coach Scott Smith was pleased with his team hanging in and wrestling well against some tough competition.

“If a couple of matches went differently against Union Grove or Marist, we could have had a different result,” said Smith, who gave his team a tough test to serve as a dose of wht they will face competing at the state level.

“There were a lot of positive signs during Tuesday night’s matches,” Smith added.

Sandy Creek wrestled at the Blue Devil Classic this weekend and will wrestle in the South Metro Invitational at McIntosh next Friday and Saturday.
