Compared to the often multi-hour road safety checks along city streets and county highways, it was a relatively brief affair. But police from Fayetteville, Senoia and Coweta County Sheriff’s Office in the early morning hours of April 28 made six arrests and issued 10 citations on Ga. Highway 85 in less than two hours.

Officers set up the road check location on Hwy. 85 at 1:15 a.m., checking vehicles until 3 a.m. Also participating were three K-9 units from across the jurisdictions.

Arrests were made for driving under the influence, apprehension of a wanted fugitive and other infractions such as driving on a suspended license. Citations were issued for violations such as driving under the influence and failure to use a child restraint device.

Fayetteville had eight units on hand for the road check. Assistance from jurisdictions in Coweta County came by way of three units of Coweta Sheriff’s Highway Enforcement of Aggressive Traffic (HEAT) detail and four units from Senoia Police.

Fayetteville Police Maj. Kevin Gooding said operating a multi-jurisdictional road safety check allows local police to multiply resources while continuing to monitor and respond to calls that come in. Combining forces is also indicative of the positive working relationship between the agencies, he said.

“Safety checks also show we’re serious about ensuring the safety of Fayetteville residents,” Gooding said.
