A future physicist currently at Sandy Creek High has been awarded a grant from Norfolk State University to pursue his studies.

The university’s prestigious Dozoretz National Institute has named high school senior James Mathis a 2007 scholar for Mathematics and Applied Sciences (DNIMAS). DNIMAS, a rigorous honors program for students majoring in biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, mathematics and physics, was designed to address the severe shortage of scientists by producing highly trained graduates who are capable of earning the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree. The program provides a full academic scholarship and/or grant, which covers tuition, fees, room, board and a book allowance.

Scholarship recipients must attend a four-week summer session, enroll in required honors courses each semester, participate in summer internships at the nation's premier laboratories and universities, maintain at least a "B” average at all times, earn no grades lower than a "C" and make satisfactory progress toward a degree each semester.

Mathis, a member of the SCHS National Honor Society and one of three recipients of a $10,000 merit scholarship from Coldwell Banker Real Estate Corporation, will begin his studies this summer as a DNIMAS physics major.
