First round results in state soccer playoffs

The state soccer playoffs began like they always seem to for the McIntosh Lady Chiefs, with a shutout victory. McIntosh, ranked third in Class AAAA, got two goals a piece from KC Hewitt, Kaelyn Horton and Meghan O’Rourke, while Jessalyn Moore and Kate Marnock each scored one.

The Lady Chiefs (12-7) will play at Dutchtown next Tuesday and the winner will face the winner of the St. Pius and Salem game on Friday, May 4.
Starr’s Mill’s Lady Panthers (12-3-1), the sixth ranked team in Class AAAA, traveled to meet Greenbrier, Evans, the fifth ranked team in Class AAAA and won 3-2. Katrina Frost scored all 3 goals and Mandy McCalla had 1 assist.

“It was a hard fought match and all our players played well enough for us to win,” said Coach Mike Hanie.

Starr’s Mill will play at Thomas County Central next Tuesday and the winner will take on the winner of North Springs and Chapel Hill next Friday.

Whitewater’s Lady Wildcats (11-6-1), ranked fourth in Class AAAA, defeated Lakeside,Evans 3-0 on Tuesday. Erin Emerson scored two goals and Emily Culbreth scored the third goal on a direct kick. Brittany Vining and Holly Crawford had assists in the win.

Whitewater will take on Lee County on the road next Tuesday. The winner will meet the winner of the Sequoyah and Lakeside-DeKalb game next Friday.

The boys began their state playoffs on Wednesday.

The McIntosh Chiefs varsity boys soccer team (17-0-2), ranked first in AAAA, defeated Glynn Academy 3-0 on Wednesday night on the strength of two goals from Cameron Black and an own goal from their opponent. McIntosh will host Baldwin County next Wednesday and the winner of that match will take on the winner of St. Pius and Heritage on Saturday, May 5.

Starr’s Mill’s boys defeated Lakeside-Evans 5-0. Matt O’Connor scored the first goal, followed by a goal from Matt Thompson on an assist from Chris Capati. Ryan Clark scored the third goal on an another assist from Capati and Shane Moroney scored the fourth goal with a throw in that was deflected into the net. Capati scored the fifth and final goal in the second half.

Starr’s Mill (12-3-3), ranked third in AAAA, will take on Upson Lee on the road next Wednesday. The winner will face the winner of Habersham Central and Rome next Saturday.

Whitewater’s boys (13-5-1), ranked seventh in AAAA, faced Richmond County on the road and won 2-1. Ryan Pugh scored both goals on headers and Kyle Adams assisted on both goals with free kicks. Coach Shane Pulliam praised the play of goalkeeper Jordan Cooper, as well as the play of Zach Taylor, Andy Debusk, Josh Adair and Brian Forero. They will play at Thomas County Central next Wednesday. The winner will face the winner of the Sequoyah and Marist match next Saturday.
Fayette County’s boys fell to Greenbrier 4-0. The Tigers ended their season with a record of 9-8-1.

In Class AAAAA state playoff play, East Coweta’s Lady Indians (14-5) defeated Tift County 2-0. Andrea Dawson and Chelsea hise scored the goals in the game. They will now face Union Grove on the road next Tuesday. The winner of that game will take on the winner of the Walton and Grayson game next Friday. The East Coweta boys (11-8) fell to Warner Robins 1-0. The game went to penalty kicks and the Indians lost 5-4.
