The high school baseball season has been full of excitement thus far and, if recent events are any indicator, the remainder of the season is going to be filled with some great play as well.
Whitewater’s Wildcats got back into the swing of things with a 6-3 win over Northgate on Friday and a 13-8 win over Fayette County on Monday.

Against Northgate, Justin Carpenter pitched a complete game for the win and his defense played errorless ball behind him. Heine Rivera provided half of the offense with a three run home run and Ryan Johnson added a blast of his own. In the game against Fayette County, Carpenter drove in four runs, three of which came from a home run, while Kevin Lewallen, the winning pitcher, had three RBIs. Ryan Gilreath added two RBIs and Heine Rivera added one. Fayette got RBIs from Trey Carter and Matthew Jackson, both with three, and Mitch Ward with one.

“We had a chance to put them away a few times but didn’t do it,” said Whitewater coach Frank Dixon. “We’ve got to learn to do it. Fayette County is a team good enough to beat anybody.” Dixon also praised the defensive play of Johnson and Gilreath.

Whitewater (15-7, 9-3 region) has a huge game today when they host Woodward Academy (18-3, 10-2) at 5:30 p.m. Woodward defeated Northgate (19-3, 9-3) on Monday.

Starr’s Mill (13-8, 11-2) has now won eight games in a row and sit atop the standings in region 2-AAAA. The Panthers defeated Fayette County (6-15, 4-8) 8-3 in eight innings on Friday and defeated McIntosh (14-9, 7-6) on Monday 11-9. Bryan Daniels got the win against the Chiefs and Ed Cook hit a home run in the win. Ben Barter hit a home run and drove in two runs for McIntosh, while Brandon Harris also had two RBIs.

Starr’s Mill plays at Westlake (3-11, 1-9) today and will host Northgate in a huge game on Monday at 5:30 p.m. before the regular season finale against Whitewater on Wednesday. McIntosh closes out their season with road games at Fayette County today, Westlake on Friday and Northgate next Wednesday.

In region 6-AAA, Sandy Creek (11-10, 4-6) picked up a big region win on Friday against Haralson County, 4-3. The Patriots are tied for fourth in the region with four region games remaining on their schedule. The Patriots hosted Carrollton last night and will host Central, Carroll on Friday, and Villa Rica on Monday at 5:45 p.m. before closing out the season on the road against Cedartown on Wednesday and Fayette County on Friday.

In region 5-A, Landmark Christian (9-6, 6-4 region) split in their two region games over the weekend. The War Eagles beat Fellowship Christian 18-2, but lost to Providence Christian 7-6. Against Fellowship, Brandon Belveal was the winning pitcher, while Tanner Bryant smacked two homeruns and Trey Strickland and Cole Abernathy each added one.

In the Providence game, Kyle Wren and Blake Austin each had three hits, but it wasn’t enough.

Landmark is in fourth place in the region. They took on St. Francis, the third place team last night after the paper went to press and will host Mt. Paran, the fifth place team next Monday at 5 p.m.
