Local Civitan clubs throughout Georgia are joining Civitan clubs around the world in celebrating Civitan Awareness Month during April.

The Fayette County Civitan Club in Fayetteville, Ga. was chartered in June, 1970. Charles Ballard and Red Benefield were charter members. The Line Creek Civitan Club in Peachtree City was formed in May 2004.

The Civitan clubs in Fayette County are working hard supporting local community projects such as the Joseph Sams School, Special Olympics, the YMCA, and other projects supporting those persons with developmental disabilities.

Civitan Awareness Month is designated as a time for clubs to honor the founding of the organization and promote awareness of Civitan's purpose and projects. In Georgia, Civitans support Camp Big Heart at the Ft. YargoState Park and Camp Civitan in Albany, Ga. These camps provided summer camps for the developmentally disabled.

Local Civitan clubs meet a wide variety of needs in their communities, with an emphasis on helping people with developmental disabilities. The Civitan International Foundation continues this mission with a $20 million dollar commitment to its flagship project, the Civitan International Research Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Civitan is an international association of local community service clubs. Started in Birmingham, Ala. in 1917, Civitan has become one of the world’s leading volunteer service organizations, with more than 40,000 men, women and youth in 24 countries.
