PTC should emulate Newnan’s Market Days

The city of Newnan’s annual Market Days starts Saturday, April 9, and continues every first Saturday of the month through December.

Many vendors, 49 so far, will be set up around the city square in downtown Newnan to sell their wares.

Market Days is not a flea market or a multi-garage sale event. Vendor items must be hand-made, home-made or homegrown. For more info and list of vendors, go to www.mainstreetnewnan.com.

Many benefit from Market Days to include local businesses, Realtors, vendors and shoppers. For a very affordable fee, anyone may be a vendor except those who sell weapons and obviously objectionable items. Vendors do not have to be Coweta County residents. There are no applicant denials due to “someone else is selling that.”

Market Days should be considered by Peachtree City and other cities. Now in PTC, we have only the Shakerag Arts and Crafts Festival. The Shakerag, a once-a-year event, is held in September. It has no inclement weather provisions. It was cancelled two years ago due to concerns that trees might fall on shoppers and vendors. It was not rescheduled for the fall, and many vendors who sold Christmas and other fall/winter items lost the opportunity to make money.

The Shakerag’s location is not near any PTC shopping areas. Therefore, local businesses might not benefit from the thousands of people who come to PTC that weekend.

Shakerag’s application fee is $150. Not all applicants are accepted, and preference is not given to local artisans.

The Shakerag and Market Days are different. I think there is room in Peachtree city for both type events.
