The City of Peachtree City has scheduled a community-wide volunteer litter removal day on Saturday, April 7 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. as part of The Great American Cleanup. Individuals, families, and groups can volunteer to pick up litter in various sections of the City, along both roadways and paths, or to beautify parks or public areas throughout the City.

Between March 1 and May 31, volunteers across the country will rally together to improve their local parks, public spaces, waterways, hiking trails, sidewalks and streets by participating in Keep America Beautiful's Great American Cleanup, the nation's largest annual community improvement program.

Great American Cleanup activities will be part of a larger national effort that is expected to involve more than 2 million people, volunteering more than 8 million hours to clean, beautify and improve 15,000 communities during 30,000 events in all 50 states. Activities will include beautifying parks and recreation areas, cleaning seashores and waterways, handling recycling collections, picking up litter and removing scrap tires, planting trees and flowers, and conducting educational programs and litter-free events.

Peachtree City spokesperson Betsy Tyler said, “We chose to hold our event on April 7 to let Peachtree City do some ‘spring cleaning’ before we welcome the world to our community for the Tour de Georgia on April 16.”

The 2006 Great American Cleanup produced phenomenal results with over 228 million pounds of litter and debris collected; more than 2.5 million scrap tires and 37 million plastic (PET) bottles removed from the waste stream; 10,000 illegal dump sites cleaned; 38.5 million pounds of aluminum and steel recycled; over 5.5 million trees, flowers and bulbs planted and more than 6,000 miles of rivers, lakes and shorelines cleaned by the strength of over 2 million volunteers.

Founded in 1953, Keep America Beautiful, Inc. (KAB), is the nation's largest nonprofit community improvement and educational organization. KAB’s three areas of focus are litter prevention, beautification and community improvement, and waste reduction. The organization works with businesses, schools, neighborhood groups and local governments to improve our land, waters, and built environment.
