Senoia in line for grant

The city of Senoia could soon be the recipient of a $500,000 Employee Incentive Program grant.

Chattahoochee Flint Regional Development Center representative Lynn Miller told the City Council Monday night the money would be used to rework the plant expansion of Winpak Inc on Andrews Drive. The grant is used to benefit low and moderate income people, and Miller said the expansion and more than 60 new jobs would aid that community.

After the City Council signed off on the application, Miller told city administrator Richard Ferry that she would provide updates on the progress of the application.

•Approved spending $7,500 for fireworks for this year’s Memorial Day celebration. On Monday, May 28th, the city of Senoia, along with the Downtown Development Authority will stage its second annual Memorial Day parade and festivities for the whole family. Entertainment, food, children's activities, and shopping from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. will be followed by a fireworks display after dark. This year, as a special treat, the U.S. Army Ground Forces Band, headquartered at Ft. McPherson in Atlanta, will march in the 2 p.m. parade and present a concert afterwards.

• Denied a sign appeal request by Tim Durham of Country Cooking Buffett. Durham is getting ready to open his restaurant at the intersection of Ga. Highways 85 and 16 and wanted to replace the sign on the roof with a sign showing the new name of the restaurant.

But the city’s sign ordinance does not allow rooftop signs, despite an existing Hank’s BBQ sign currently on top of the building. City officials admitted the sign should not have been allowed, and denied Durham’s request.

• Announced a town hall meeting for April 26 at 6 p.m. at the senior citizens center on Howard Road.
