Coweta father-son duo overseas as MarinesFri, 03/30/2007 - 10:29am

Coweta County residents Lt. Col. Warren D. Deeds and his son, Lance Cpl.Warren M. Deeds, are simultaneously serving their country as U.S. Marines stationed in the Iraq and Afghanistan area of operations. Deeds Sr. is serving at Camp Fallujah, Iraq, as a liaison officer. He is a Marine reservist, attached to the 4th Civil Affairs Group out of Washington D.C. as an individual augment, but his parent unit is Marine Aircraft Group-42 out of Naval Air Station, Atlanta, Ga. His duties as liaison officer to the 4th CAG include obtaining data and compiling reports for assessments of civil military operations to the Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters. Deeds Jr. is serving on board the USS Stennis in the Arabian Sea, conducting flight operations in support of NATO operations in Afghanistan. He serves as an avionics technician with the “Death Rattlers” of the Marine Fighter Attack Squadron-323. He works on the electrical systems of the aircrafts in his squadron. Deeds Sr. is a graduate of Georgia State University and Georgia Institute of Technology while Deeds Jr. graduated from Northgate High School in 2005, and enlisted in the Marine Corps that June, completed recruit training September 2005. His permanent duty station is Marine Corps Air Station, Miramar, Calif. The Deeds family has a line of naval aviation military history. Deeds Jr. has the same birthplace as his squadron, MCAS Cherry Point, NC. Marine Fighter Attack Sqaudron-323 originated there during World War II. Deeds Jr. was born there when his father was serving as a 2nd lieutenant as an aviation supply officer with Marine Aircraft Group 14, making Deeds Jr. the 3rd generation of his family to serve on an aircraft carrier, and the 4th generation of his family to serve in naval aviation. Deeds Jr.’s great grandfather, Chief Petty Officer Joe Wuller, was one of the first 60 enlisted men to serve in naval aviation in 1914, where he was a member of the squadron that served on the first aircraft carrier, the USS Langley. Wuller’s son, Warren Lewis Deeds, Deeds Sr.’s father, served in naval aviation as an airman in the US Navy during the Korean War at Naval Air Station North Island. Lastly, Deeds Sr. served onboard the USS John F. Kennedy during their Mediterranean cruise in 1988-89 when he was the squadron supply officer. Deeds Sr. has been in Iraq from September to March, while Deeds Jr. deployed in February and is projected to serve through August. Mrs. Andrea Deeds and daughter Karla Deeds continue to reside in Coweta County, Ga. login to post comments |
