The McIntosh and Starr’s Mill varsity girls lacrosse teams faced off last week and McIntosh got an 11-10 win over the Lady Panthers.
Both teams scored within the first two minutes with McIntosh’s Taylor Lugash scoring first and Starr’s Mill’s Alix Stanley scored seconds later. The Lady Chiefs answered with two more goals one from Lugash and one from Rachel Weissman before Lugash went on to score three more goals in the half. Brit Lapalm and Kelly Polo also scored in the first half, while Starr’s Mill’s second goal in the first half came from Kellie Sligar.

Starr’s Mill trailed 8-2 at the half but after one more McIntosh goal from Lugash early in the second half, Starr’s Mill rattled off seven straight goals to tie the game. Goals were scored by Sarah Risley, Catherine Sanders, Sarah Jagstadt, Stanley and Lindsey Shirley. Weissman and LaPalm answered for McIntosh giving them an 11-9 lead with two minutes remaining. Sanders got another goal for Starr’s Mill with just under two minutes left but McIntosh kept the Lady Panthers out of the net and held on for the win.

The Lady Chiefs will host Woodward Academy at McIntosh at 5:30 next Tuesday, while Starr’s Mill hosts Woodward today at 5 p.m.

The McIntosh varsity boys lacrosse team (4-1) came off of four straight road games for their first home game Monday night at Booth Middle School. The team continued to roll dominating Kell by a score of 17-6. The ball movement offense resulted in an amazing new McIntosh record as nine different players scored, coming from six different players with assists. The game opened with a tight first quarter with McIntosh coming from behind to open a slight lead, 3-2. The stick skills and passing of the Chiefs then took control of the game for good.

Sophomore Nicco DeRosa and freshman Zack Ward led the assault with four goals each, DJ Ward and Brian Huefner each had two goals a piece, with goals from David Bexley, Caleb Benson, Garrett Lee, Cam Elward, and Carl Scheumann. The defense led by Alex Milani, Nathan DeRosa, Zane McCarthy and Bradley Harris continued to play well and clear the ball effectively. Goalies Cooper O’Brien and Graham Walsh were steady but not really tested.

The Chiefs, ranked eighth in the state, faced off against sixth ranked Harrison Wednesday night in McIntosh Stadium and won 9-6. The Chiefs had a 7-2 lead at the half thanks to four goals from Zack Ward, two from D.J. Ward and one from Elward. The scoring slowed down for Mcintosh in the second half but Benson and DJ Ward added two more goals in the final quarter to secure the win. O’Brien, a freshman, made a number of incredible saves in the second half and Lee, Brennan Ott and Joe Maskery dominated the face-offs giving the team the ball in critical situations.

“I think we may have beaten a better team tonight,” commented Coach Mike Muetzel after the game. “But we were ready and played our style of team lacrosse.”

McIntosh is back in action tomorrow at 6 p.m. for a key area game against 14th ranked Pace Academy.
