Before the 2007 season even started people knew play in region 2-AAAA was going to be a battle.
McIntosh, Starr’s Mill and Whitewater’s boys and girls teams are all currently ranked in the top 10 and they all have to deal with Woodward Academy teams ranked in the top 10 and tough teams from Fayette County on the boys side and Northgate on the girls side. The head to head battles between these teams are fun to watch because they all count this year. If you lose too many of these games, you might find yourself watching the state playoffs from the stands.

The epic contests continued as McIntosh’s boys and girls soccer teams got significant 1-0 region wins over their Whitewater counterparts last Friday night. The win kept the boys (9-0-2, 5-0 region) at the top of the region standings and gave the girls a region win that puts Whitewater, Starr’s Mill and themselves all with one region loss.

The goal in the boys game was scored by Michael Mateos in the first half after some confusion in front of the Whitewater net. The Lady Chiefs (6-4, 3-1 region) got their goal in the second half of their game. It was scored by K.C. Hewitt and Olivia Tucker got the assist.

“It was a very important win for us,” said coach Marcia Clark of the Lady Chiefs’ victory. “We needed this.” Clark added that she was pleased that the team continued to attack and put pressure on the Lady Wildcats after the goal.

Discussing the win by the boys team, coach Bunky Colvin stated that team speed was the key to putting an enormous amount of pressure on Whitewater.

The boys will face Chamblee, the team that knocked them out of the playoffs last year, tomorrow and Marist, ranked fourth in Class AAAA, on the road at 4 p.m. on Saturday. The girls will play at St. Pius, ranked second in Class AAAA, tonight at 7 p.m. and will play at third ranked Marist on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

Whitewater’s girls (4-2-1, 2-1 region) hosted Salem, ranked ninth in Class AAAA, last night after the paper went to press and will host Westlake tonight at 5:30 p.m. They will have a huge game this Friday when they play at top ranked Woodward Academy at 5:30 p.m. The boys (3-3, 1-2 region) will play Westlake and Woodward Academy after the girls’ games. Woodward’s boys are ranked fourth in AAAA.

The Fayette County Tigers’ boys soccer team raised its record to 6-3 last week with two Region 2-AAAA victories on the road. Last Tuesday, the Tigers defeated Creekside 13-0, behind the four goal, two assist performance of junior midfielder Chris Feigenbaum. Junior striker Luis Martinez added two goals and the scoring was completed by Mark Torre, Ryan Whitehead, Tope Mumuney, Ryan Edwards, juniors Bobby Dodd and Edwin Arriola, and sophomore striker Okurin Aiyankhebor.

On Friday night the Tigers travelled to windy Newnan to battle the Northgate Vikings. Fayette County endured a physical game, and prevailed 2-0, on goals by Aiyankhebor and junior Sehoon Shon. The Tiger defense held the Vikings under 10 shots, led by senior sweeper Whitehead, juniors Alberto Martinez and John Aymerich, and sophomore Brian Washington.

The Tigers are now 6-3 overall (3-1 in the region) and host Salem today and Westlake Friday.

The Lady Tigers (1-5, 1-2 region) got their first win last week by beating Creekside 9-0. They fell to Northgate last Friday 8-0. They played at Newnan last night and will host Westlake on Friday.

Starr’s Mill’s boys (6-1-3, 4-1 region) won their second straight game in penalty kicks last Friday, beating St. Pius 3-2 with a 3-2 edge in penalty kicks. The Panthers hosted Northside-Columbus last night at 7:30 p.m. and will host Northgate next Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Panthers (6-2-1, 3-1 region) are off until next Tuesday’s game with Northgate, which will be played after the boys game.

Sandy Creek’s boys and girls hosted 6-AAA opponents Carrollton last night after the paper went to press and will host Cedartown on Saturday with the girls (2-6, 2-3 region) playing at 2 p.m. and the boys (3-3-1, 2-3 region) playing at 4 p.m.
