East Coweta High School senior Daniel Rahim was announced as the 2007 Coweta County STAR student March 2, and was recognized along with STAR students from all Coweta County High Schools by the Newnan Rotary Club.

Rahim, who was supported by parents Enayet and Shamsun Rahim and East Coweta Principal Derek Pitts, also introduced East Coweta AP Chemistry teacher Dan Harrington as his STAR teacher, recognizing Harrington as the teacher who has influenced him the most during his academic career.

It was the third year in a row, and the fourth time overall, that Harrington has been recognized as East Coweta’s STAR teacher by the school’s STAR student. Rahim is now eligible to compete for district and possibly state STAR student, and will represent the county at the March 20 STAR student regional banquet in Columbus.

Rahim and Harrington were introduced along with the STAR students and teachers from Newnan High School, East Coweta High School and the Heritage School. Friday’s STAR student luncheon was sponsored by the Newnan Rotary Club and Rotary president Clay Hudson, and was held at the Newnan Country Club.

In addition to Rahim, this year’s STAR students for Coweta were Newnan High School STAR students Brady Sumner, and Star Teacher Vivian Dunn, AP calculus. Sumner’s parents Mike and Leah Sumner were in attendance and STAR student Jacob Shepherd, IV, and STAR Teacher Angie Markham, AP American Literature. Shepherd’s parents Phyllis and Jacob Shepherd were in attendance.

Northgate High School’s STAR student was Alan Tipert and STAR teacher Michael Berry, AP U.S. History. Tipert’s mother Andrea Crawford was in attendance.

The Heritage School’s STAR student was Alexa Kister and STAR Teacher Dorothy Rich, Math. Kister’s parents Alex and Hallie Kister were in attendance.

Also attending Friday’s program were Superintendent Blake Bass, Coweta County Board of Education members Frank Farmer, Sue Brown, Winston Dowdell and Mike Sumner, East Coweta High School Principal Derek Pitts, Northgate High Principal Therese Redekopp, Newnan High School Principal Steve Barker, and Smokey Road Middle School Principal Laurie Barron.

Two Newnan High School students tied for the honor of STAR student this year, and so Shepherd and Sumner both represent the schools as STAR students.

The Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) Program is held throughout the state of Georgia each year to recognize outstanding high school seniors and the teachers who have been most instrumental in their academic development.

Under the program, a top academic senior in each participating Georgia high school is named the STAR student for that high school. To obtain the STAR nomination, students must have the highest score in one sitting on the new three-part Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) taken through the November test date of their senior year. They must also be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of their class based on grade point average.

Each high school STAR student then chooses the teacher who has had the greatest influence on their academic career as his or her STAR teacher.
