Starr’s Mill hosted the biggest matches of the young soccer season last Friday night as they faced off against McIntosh’s varsity boys and girls. All four teams are ranked in the top 10 of Class AAAA.

The boys placed first and the Chiefs struck first with Michael Mateos scoring after a scramble in front of the Panther goal with just over four minutes remaining in the first half. Starr’s Mill’s Chris Capati answered less than a minute into the second half and the two teams remained tied until McIntosh’s Derek Farnsworth found the upper lefthand corner of the net with a blast off of a breakaway down the right sideline. The score remained 2-1 and McIntosh left with a significant region win.

“Derek wanted this win really bad,” said Coach Bunky Colvin after the game, also heaping praise onto defender Joaquin Reyes who prevented a certain Starr’s Mill goal in the first half. “Not only did he make that save, but he was in the right place all night tonight.”

The McIntosh girls didn’t fare as well as their male counterparts. Starr’s Mill’s Katrina Frost scored less than 10 minutes into the game and scored off of an indirect kick with just over five minutes remaining in the first half. Nearly halfway through the second half. the Lady Panthers’ Marlene Davis outdid Reyes’ amazing defensive save by heading out two sure-fire McIntosh goals in a row. The Lady Chiefs did score with just over 16 minutes remaining in the game off of a booming kick from Kaelyn Horton that found the top of the net. Starr’s Mill hung on for a 2-1 victory.

Starr’s Mill played at Fayette County last night, while McIntosh hosted Creekside.

Sandy Creek’s girls defeated Villa Rica 5-2 on Friday. Savanna Woody scored two goals for the Lady Patriots while Joana Ortega, Deanna Mitchell and Ally Treat scored the other goals. Coach Silvia Riet stated that Treat and Dana Morrison, both seniors, played well. The Sandy Creek boys beat Villa Rica 8-1. Harry Lee scored five goals for the Patriots while Jerry Riet scored two goals and Kyle Dennis added one. Coach Stephane Allagnon also stated that goalkeeper Tyler Wright made some great saves in the goal, while midfielders Garrett Harper and Alejandro Guerrero also kept the pressure on the opposing defense.

Sandy Creek hosts Newnan tonight at 6 and 8 p.m.

Whitewater hosted Lakeside-DeKalb last night and will play at Starr’s Mill on Friday at 6 and 8 p.m.
