Tigers, Wildcats and Lady Chiefs win holiday tournaments
The Thanksgiving holiday wasn’t a turkey for several local hoops teams as both Fayette County and Whitewater’s boys won the holiday tournaments they were participating in.

Fayette County played in the Arrowhead Classic in Morrow and won it all, defeating Landmark Christian 57-3 in the first game. Chris Pettiway scored 15 points in the win, while Jeremiah Enloe added 12 points and Channing Welch chipped in nine points and 15 rebounds. The Tigers then took on McNair and won 88-71. Coach Andre Flynn stated that the Tiger’s defensive pressure eventually wore down McNair’s offense. Brandon Henderson led the team with 20 points, while Welch added 18 points and 15 rebounds and Pettiway scored 17 points and added five assists. The win put the Tigers against Creekside in the final and Fayette County won 64-60. Lamar Remike stepped up for the Tigers, scoring 22 points, while Pettiway, who was named the tournament MVP, added 13 points and six assists.

“Our defense really kept us in the game,” said Flynn. “Remike hit a huge three pointer with 58 seconds left and we held on.”

Fayette County will host Mundy’s Mill on Friday with the girls game starting at 7 p.m. and the boys game beginning at 8:30 p.m.

The Whitewater boys won the Our Lady of Mercy Thanksgiving tournament with wins over McIntosh and Dutchtown. The Wildcats opened a 15-4 lead early in the first quarter and built it into a 46-19 lead at the half. Things slowed down considerably for Whitewater in the second half, while McIntosh charged back to make things much more interesting. Though it was 52-28 at the end of the third, McIntosh went on a 16-5 run to close the gap to 57-46. Whitewater added three to the total and won 60-46.

Zach Scurry had 16 points and seven rebounds for Whitewater, while teammates Jay Bright and Stepehn Sargetnt added 13 points and 12 points respectively. Sargent also had three blocks and Trey Scales added 10 points and nine assists. Kevin Lewallen had six steals.

On Saturday, the Wildcats outlasted Dutchtown 68-60. Down by six at the half, Whitewater battled back, tying the game at the end of the third and taking and keeping the lead in the fourth. Scales had 17 points and six rebounds in the win, while Sargent added 13 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks, Bright chipped in 12 points and eight assists and Lewallen had 11 points and 12 rebounds. Bright and Sargent scored all of their points in the second half and Coach Brent Jackson credited Vincent Webb, Chris Asbury and Grant Mannion for playing well off of the bench. Webb had five rebounds and four steals for the Wildcats.

Sargent was named to the all tournament team and Bright was named the tournament’s MVP.

Whitewater played at Dutchtown last night after the paper went to press.

The McIntosh girls defeated the Whitewater Lady Wildcats 52-46 on Friday. Tied at 40 with just under four minutes to go in overtime, McIntosh was able to pull in some key rebounds and make big free throws down the stretch to get the win. Elyse Chubb led the Lady Chiefs with 24 points and five rebounds, while Erin Justice added 16 points, six rebounds and three blocks. On Saturday, they took on the Dutchtown Lady Dawgs and won 65-54. Chubb was the leading scorer for McIntosh once again with 27 points, while Justice added 12, Holly Houghton chipped in eight and Alexis Williams added seven. The win gave the Lady Chiefs the tournament title and improved their record to 2-1. Chubb was named the tournament MVP and Justice was named to the all tournament team. Coach Steve Kidd cited good team defense as a key contributor to the tournament wins.

McIntosh played at East Coweta last night and will host Our Lady of Mercy on Friday.

Whitewater’s girls faced Our Lady of Mercy on Saturday and won 48-42. They opened an 11-0 lead in the first quarter and, according to coach Dave Pina, did a great job of boxing out and making free throws. Brittany Vining led the team with 14 points. She and Courtney Walker each had 15 points in the loss to McIntosh.

In the Arrowhead tournament, Landmark Christian School’s boys went 0-3. After their opening game loss to Fayette County, the War Eagles fell to Morrow 52-41 and closed the tournament with a 64-41 loss to Lovejoy. Stoney Hill led the team in scoring with 14 points against Fayette County and 12 points against Morrow. In the same two games, Justin Favors scored 12 points and nine points. In the Lovejoy loss, freshman John Riggins scored 10 points and pulled in seven rebounds.

Starr’s Mill’s boys and girls did not play in a tournament but did travel to take on Pope on Saturday. The results were mixed. While the Lady Panthers won 57-29 to stay undefeated, the boys lost 61-49. It was their first loss of the season. Emily Woodward led the girls with 10 points, while Kirstin Massmann added nine and Meredith Lytle chipped in eight. The boys, who were outscored 13-5 in the opening quarter and found themselves down 31-19 in the first half, were led by Bo Tiller’s 13 points. Spencer Shelton added 10 points and Justin Reed added nine points. Shelton added nine rebounds, while Tiller pulled in six.
