The Fayette County 105 Blue Devils faced off against a familiar foe, the Tucker Lions, in the UYFC Championship Game at Stockbridge High School. Though the Blue Devils trailed the Lions 13-0 early and 19-6 at the half, after a touchdown run by Keante Green, the Blue Devils fought back with a stout defense and a determined offense to win 20-19.

“I knew we were still in the game because we had moved the ball well in the first half, only to have turnovers and penalties stop drives,” said Coach Ted Morgan. “I told the defense to tighten in the second half and the offense would take care of the rest, which they did.”

Quarterback Trevor Morgan hit Kendall Conley with a 14 yard touchdown pass early in the third quarter to make the score 19-12. The defense allowed the Lions nothing in their next few possessions and in the fourth quarter the Blue Devils went on the championship winning drive.

Green scored his second touchdown of the day with six minutes to go, thanks to a drive full of good running and trap blocking from Blake Barnes. Coach Morgan made the decision to go for two points, which in their league is a kicking attempt. Bucky Wesolowski, who had an interception earlier in the game, held the ball steady and Hunter Bening split the uprights to give the Blue Devils a 20-19 lead.

The defense held tight, aided by key tackles from Conley, Tremond Gates and company and an interception by Devodriq Roberts.

“The effort was total and was a testament to the hard work these boys had put in this fall,” said Morgan. “I know of no team that is more deserving of a championship.”

Morgan cited solid running from Green and Barnes, as well as from Jamel Gilliam, and great offensive line play from Bening, Jalen Jackson, Jeffrey Murphy, Wesley White, Tony Battle, Gates and Conley. On defense, Morgan gave credit to Wesolowski and Roberts for key interceptions, Battle for a pass break-up and hard tackling from Bryant Williams, Bryan Taylor, Justin Masler, Gates, Gilliam, Green, Barnes and Conley.
