It was a sign of the times. The familiar kiosk signs on the South Fulton Parkway denoting new residential development are about to be a thing of the past. At least in Union City.

The city council heard a report at the Feb. 20 city council meeting that the signs would be coming down inside the recently annexed 6.5-mile portion of the parkway that lies inside city limits. The removal of the kiosk signs identifying area subdivisions by realtors came at the city’s order.

“Once we annexed the area on the South Fulton Parkway there was a series of signage that had been (previously) placed by a private business entity,” said Mayor Ralph Moore. “Those signs currently reside in the right-of-ways. And according to Fulton County zoning those signs are prohibited. Our sign ordinance also prohibits them.”

Moore said the city had notified the owners about removing them. Public Works Director Buddy Landrum said the owners had been notified and had agreed to remove them by April.

Moore continued, questioning why Fulton County had previously allowed and continued to allow the signs to be posted.

“What we have are areas that are currently adjacent to Union City but not in Union City, in unincorporated Fulton County, that have those signs illegally placed in the right-of-way of the community.”

After some discussion, city attorney Dennis Davenport was asked to draft a letter to Fulton County Commission asking for the reasons why the signs were being allowed.
