Quests for state basketball titles start tonight

Eight local basketball teams have made the state tournaments in their respective classifications. There will be three games tonight and five tomorrow.

Sandy Creek’s girls (21-5), the second seed out of region 6-AAA, will host the North Hall Lady Trojans (17-11) at 6 p.m. tonight. Coach Leslie Cooper expects to see a good battle between the two teams’ post players and point guards.

Up the road a bit in Fairburn, Landmark Christian’s Lady War Eagles, aka the Brickhouse Belles will host Lakeview Academy at 7 p.m. Landmark won the region 5-A title. The Hunnicutt sisters, Christian and Diamond, have been dominant all season for Landmark, which has won 16 games in a row. Lakeview’s Lady Lions are 6-2 over their last eight games.

Starr’s Mill’s Lady Panthers will travel to Evans to face the Greenbrier Lady Wolfpack at 6 p.m. tonight. Greenbrier won their region championship and is undefeated, while Starr’s Mill is 11-17 overall and 2-4 over their last six games.

The first game on Saturday will be Landmark’s boys at Tallulah Falls at 2 p.m. The War Eagles are the third seed from Class A. They have gone 3-2 over their last five games but have gelled together and played well this year.Tallulah Falls has won five of their last seven games.
Fayette County’s Lady Tigers (20-6), the region 2-AAAA champions, will host Effingham County at 5 p.m. on Saturday and the Fayette County boys, also region champions, will host Ware County following the girl’s game. The Lady Tigers have been led all year by the play of sophomore Tessah Holt and junior Kristene Walker.
Effingham County had an eight game win streak snapped by two straight losses.

The boys (23-5) have been led by sophomore Noel Johnson but have also received tremendous team support from Brandon Boykin, Cuincy Carruthers and Derrick Walker to name a few.
Ware County (17-9) has lost five of their last six games.

The McIntosh Chiefs (11-16), the fourth seed from region 2-AAAA, will play their first state basketball game in school history on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Richmond Academy.

The Chiefs felled the playoff-caliber Creekside Seminoles last week in the region tournament and know what it takes to win a big game. Richmond Academy (19-9) has won four games in a row and won their region tournament.

Whitewater’s boys (17-11), the third seed from region 2-AAAA, will play their first state basketball game in school history on Saturday as well when they travel to take on Statesboro at 7 p.m. The Wildcats have a talented team that has played together for four years. Statesboro is also 17-11 and they too went 2-1 in their region tournament.
