What started as a typical underage drinking case for Fayetteville Police netted a suspect in a weekend shooting at a night club in Forest Park, police said.

One of those arrested on the underage drinking charges turned out to be Cortez Thompson, 19, of Ellenwood, who was wanted for various felony arrest warrants issued by the Clayton County Magistrate Court, police said.

In those warrants, Thompson is accused of “firing numerous bullets” and hitting a 15-year-old male five times, a 17-year-old once in the leg and a 17-year-old female at least four times, police said.

The investigation was initiated by a Fayetteville police officer working an off-duty security job at the Fayette Bowling Center, said police Lt. Beverly Trainor. While walking through the parking lot, the officer spotted several people hanging out in a vehicle and when he approached he saw some alcohol.

A total of seven adults and one juvenile were arrested at the time, but it wasn’t until later, while the suspects were booked at the jail, that police found out there were warrants from Clayton County for one of those arrested: Cortez Thompson, 19, of Ellenwood.

The warrants for Thompson included three counts of aggravated assault, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and cruelty to children.
