A Peachtree City man will not be allowed to build a bathroom over his new six-car garage.

Richard R. Van’t Hof said he wanted the facility so he wouldn’t have to leave his attic work area “to go out in the cold” and then into the rest of his home to use the restroom. But city Building Official Tom Carty said putting a bathroom up in the attic caused structural problems to the point where he couldn’t allow the construction to continue.

Van’t Hof can still build the bathroom on the ground floor as he initially planned to do, Carty noted. But putting it upstairs makes it a two-story building as opposed to a garage with an attic, Carty said.
The City Council upheld Carty’s decision after taking about an hour to flesh out the issue at last week’s council meeting.

Van’t Hof said there are a number of other homes in Peachtree City which have bathrooms and other rooms located over a garage. But Carty said those homes have lower walls than Van’t Hof’s garage. Carty said the problem could be corrected by lowering the garage walls to a certain height.

Van’t Hof, through his attorney, said the city didn’t site specific building codes or ordinances that the upstairs bathroom would violate. But Carty said he was working directly with Van’t Hof’s builder to resolve the issues, and later those exact citations were sent to Van’t Hof.
