The Veterans of Foreign Wars Peachtree City Post 9949 participates in the national annual essay contest for middle school students throughout the United States.

Participation is requested from all sixth-, seventh- and eight-grade students in the public, parochial-private school systems. The subject is selected by the VFW national headquarters in Kansas City each year for submission by November and is judged by a panel of judges provided by the local post.
The schools participating in the 2006 school year for the local post were: J.C. Booth, Rising Starr, Flat Rock, The Campus Tivoli Gardens, and Our Lady of Victory Catholic in Tyrone.

Participation by all these schools was and has been outstanding. Presentation to the first, second and third place winners was made at the annual Post 9949 Christmas party/dinner on Dec. 8. The subject of the 2006 essay contest was "Citizenship in America." The awards were made to the individual winners and recognition of their teacher at that time. First place was awarded a $200 bond, second place was awarded a $150 bond and a $100 bond was awarded for third place. Winners of the contest include first place winner Matthew Todd Trebuchon, an eighth-grade student at Booth taught by Cathy Carlton, second place winner Aubrey E. Edkins, a Rising Starr eighth-grade student taught by JoAnne Rouse, and Kelsey Anne Beal, an eighth grade student at The Campus Tivoli Gardens taught by Mary Anne Christopher.

Trebuchon’s winning essay has been submitted to the state level.

Post 9949 anticipates expanding the participation of schools in 2007. The program was started locally six years ago and resulted in 101 entries this past year.
