Over 300 people turned out for an end of the season party celebrating the success of the inaugural year for Tyrone Youth Soccer.

Last May, a group of parents got together in Tyrone to form a local recreation soccer league. They sent handouts to the elementary schools, became affiliated with the Georgia Youth Soccer Association (GYSA) and started taking registration as fall approached. They needed a 100 children playing to join up with the GYSA and had 140 kids sign up. They fielded 15 teams in age groups ranging from U-16 to U-14. Games were played at Shamrock Park which brought up some issues for the U-14 girls team, which had to play an away schedule for the entire season. Despite these growing pains, which also included a lack of games with neighboring communities such as Peachtree City and Fayetteville, the first season of soccer in Tyrone was fun.

Board members are looking into offering a spring season and may hold skills workshops and small sided tournaments if they aren’t able to put on a full season. They expect next fall to be even bigger and better than this past season though with improved facilities and games to be played at Handley Park.

The party was a way for Tyrone Soccer to thank the children and parents for participating in the first season. In addition to introducing all of the players and presenting them with medals, the party-goers enjoyed enough pizza and snacks to feed an army, and played a number of players vs. coaches games.
