Peachtree City’s Michael Posey has thrown his hat in the ring to become chairman of the Fayette County Republican Party. Posey has lived in Fayette County for seven years and for the last three years has served on the executive board of the Republican Party.

“I have been honored to have served on the Executive Board as a vice chair, but now I feel that I can help the local party in a more direct leadership role. Therefore, I am announcing my candidacy to run for chairman of the Fayette County Republican Party in the upcoming March 24, 2007 election. I am asking for your support and for your help,” Posey wrote in a letter to The Citizen.

Posey is pleased the state is now controlled by Republican leadership, but says there is still a lot of work to do.

“Even with the many improvements our Grand Old Party has seen in the last several years, I feel as though we can still accomplish even more at the national, state and local levels. I believe I am the leader that can help make that change happen,” he wrote.

If he’s elected, Posey said he would ask that the rules of the party be revised to exclude the local party from supporting any Republican candidate in any race that has any Republican opposition.

“It’s not the executive board’s place to be the ’Godfather’ of local Republican politics. Our job is not to support any single Republican over any other Republican, but instead, our job is to help build the foundation for which all qualified and hard-working Republicans can accept the challenge of running for public office and have already in place a network of Republican support,” he wrote.

Posey also indicated that he wanted to see a “fiscally sound and responsible budget” in which all monies raised by and for the Republican Party is directly used toward getting the first priority completed.

“No major expenditures will be approved by the board unless and until all facts are properly vetted in ‘noticed’ and ‘open’ meetings. I will not permit major expenditures to be placed on our agenda at the last moment or by oral motions, and I will require that the board members properly investigate the wisdom of these major expenses and require super majority votes by the board, rather than by a mere majority,” he wrote.

The Fayette County Republican Party is having its mass precinct meeting Saturday and county convention March 24. Both events are at the Lafayette Education Center and start at 9 a.m. To be eligible to vote at the convention, you must be named as a delegate at the precinct mass meeting.
