The state wrestling tournaments were held at The Arena at Gwinett Center last week and local teams and wrestlers did well.

In the Class AAAA meet, Whitewater placed second overall with Starr’s Mill taking sixth, Fayette County placing 11th and McIntosh taking 35th. Whitewater had two individual state champions; Jordan Strain at 152 and Jacob Williamson at 160, while Starr’s Mill had one, Brandon Witta at 145, and Fayette County had one, Audy Whittington at 171.

Other local wrestlers who placed in the top six were:
112 - Starr’s Mill’s Patrick Waters, sixth
125 - Starr’s Mill’s Joseph Hoyt, fifth
135 - Starr’s Mill’s Kevin O’ Brien, fourth
152 - Fayette County’s Sam Law, fifth
189 - Fayette County’s Patrick Blankenbeker, second

Whittington’s quarterfinal match with Alexander’s Cody Blackstock went into a fourth overtime and the final seconds of the match had to be reviewed by tape to see if time had run out before a stalling call.

In the Class AAA meet, Sandy Creek tied for 25th. Derek Wojcik, a wrestler at 160 for the Patriots, placed sixth.

In the Class A meet, Landmark Christian placed 14th and Our Lady of Mercy placed 15th. Each school had two wrestlers place within the top six in their weight class. Landmark’s Chad Thames placed fourth at 112, while teammate Josh Pollard placed sixth at 160. Mercy’s Clint Ford placed fifth at 112 and teammate Thomas Raville placed sixth at 125.
