Local wrestlers get a hold of state bidsWed, 02/14/2007 - 8:51am

Fayette County High School hosted the area 2-AAAA wrestling championships last Friday and Saturday and local teams represented themselves well. Not only did Whitewater place first and Starr’s Mill place second, but eight wrestlers from three different area schools won individual titles. They were: There were also 10 area runners-up from local schools. They were: • 103 - Fayette County’s Ali Kahn Other AAAA state tournament qualifiers are: • McIntosh - Trent Shallow (103), Jarrod Chamblee (112), Carl Scheumann (140), Bryce Hughey (152), Landis Ford (160), Erik Willanzheimer (189), Matt Carroll (215), and Sean Carney (285). • Starr’s Mill - Stephen Plante (119), John Donaldson (145) Derick King (152), Chris Gordon (215) and Drew Norton (285). • Whitewater - Tyler Shaneyfelt (103), Luke Wilkinson (119), Nathan Nestor (125), Mikey Curtis (130), Jake Huddleston (135), Jake Griffin (171) and Hendri DeBeer (189). Whitewater is currently ranked fifth in a GaSports.com wrestling coaches poll and Starr’s Mill is ranked sixth. Sandy Creek had 10 wrestlers qualify for the AAA state tournament. They are - Ben Joyner (112), Brandon Beaver (119), Stephen Hoffer (125), Alan Blackburn (135), Joey Andraos (140), Drew Gunnin (145), Julian Holmes (152), Derek Wojcik (160), Tyler Jewett (171) and Jesse Deyo (285). Gunnin, Holmes, Jewett and Deyo were area runners-up, Wojcik and Blackburn placed third and all other qualifiers from Sandy Creek placed fourth. Our Lady of Mercy qualified three wrestlers for the Class A state tournament. They are: Clint Ford (112), Thomas Raville (125) and Patrick Silloway (285). Landmark Christian qualified two wrestlers; Chad Thames (112) and Josh Pollard (160). The state tournament takes place this week at The Arena at Gwinett Center. login to post comments |
