Region basketball tournaments start as regular season comes to an endWed, 02/14/2007 - 8:49am

Last Friday marked the end of the regular season of high school basketball and things were good for some teams and not so good for others. Fayette County’s boys and girls swept Whitewater on the road. The boys won 60-56 with Noel Johnson scoring 26 points and pulling in six rebounds, Brandon Boykin scoring 17 points and Terrance Turner adding 10 rebounds. Jay Bright led Whitewater with 24 points, while Stephen Sargent added 12 points and 13 rebounds and Trey Scales added 10 points. The Lady Tigers won 55-28. Tessah Holt scored 14 points for Fayette County, while Kristene Walker and Jasmine Facey added nine. In region 2-AAAA tournament action, Fayette County’s girls faced Northgate last night. Whitewater played Banneker in a play-in game on Monday night but results were not in as of press time. Whitewater will meet Woodward Academy today at 4 p.m. and the Fayette County boys will take on Banneker tonight at 7 p.m. Starr’s Mill’s boys and girls swept Northgate on Friday. The boys got their second win of the season by defeating the Vikings 51-42. Jordan Jones scored 15 points and Paul Vogel added eight. Unfortunately, in a play-in game on Monday with Northgate, the boys lost 56-51 in overtime. The Lady Panthers beat the Lady Vikings 40-38. Alexis Shaffer scored 13 points and Tempest Ponds added 12. They took on McIntosh yesterday afternoon after the paper went to press. McIntosh’s boys and girls faced Westlake on Friday and lost. The boys lost 70-46 and the Lady Chiefs lost 44-36. Elyse Chubb scored 13 points in the loss and Erin Justice added 12 points and five assists. The Lady Chiefs took on Starr’s Mill yesterday afternoon and the boys will take on Creekside today at 5:30 p.m. Sandy Creek split with Villa Rica on Friday. The Lady Patriots won 49-48, while the boys lost 73-58. The girls are off until Friday at 4 p.m. when they will take on the winner of the Cartersville/Cedartown and Central, Carroll game. They are guaranteed a spot in the state tournament. The boys will play the winner of the Central, Carroll and Cass game on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. The 6-AAA region tournament is taking place at Haralson County High School. Our Lady of Mercy split with Galloway on Friday. The boys lost 61-54 with Jake Lethbridge scoring 15 points in the loss. The girls won 38-24. The boys got a re-match in the opening round of the 5-A tournament on Monday and won 71-58 with four players scoring in the double digits; Nick Hood scored 17 points, Nnamdi Moh added 14, Richie Obiora scored 11 and Buck Caldwell added 10. The boys will take on St. Francis on Wednesday at 4 p.m. The Lady Bobcats opened the tournament yesterday after the paper went to press with a game against Atlanta International School. Landmark Christian was off on Friday. The boys opened the region tournament on Monday and defeated Fellowship Christian 71-53. They will take on Providence Christian at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The Lady War Eagles are off until Thursday when they will take on the winner of Providence and W.D.
