A Peachtree City resident is proposing that the city establish a “city commission of education” to monitor education matters affecting the city and make recommendations to council on any actions deemed necessary.

The proposal will be presented to the City Council at its regular meeting Thursday night by Cele Eifert, a retired colonel in the U.S. Air Force.

Council will also hear a presentation on the latest version of the city’s transportation plan, which has been prepared by the traffic consulting firm Qk4.

Eifert’s request for an education commission comes on the heels of a growing dissatisfaction of how the Fayette County Board of Education handled the recent attendance redistricting process, which ended up with some Peachtree City students being shifted to the new Bennett’s Mill Middle School, which is located between Peachtree City and Fayetteville.

Eifert’s proposal is for the commission to “foster cooperation and coordination between the city and outside entities whose dealings have an educational impact on citizens.” She suggests that the commission be an official arm of the city, with five volunteer residents serving for staggered three year terms.

Eifert contends the commission would only be advisory in nature and would act “solely as a liaison between the city and the county school board and not usurp their legal authority.”

Eifert wants the commission to issue an annual report to the City Council about its activities, findings and recommendations in addition to perhaps developing a citizens academy to help citizens understand about city government.

It is not clear if council will vote on the recommendation Thursday night.

Other items on Thursday’s agenda include

• A request from the Peachtree City Travel Baseball association to modify how field scheduling occurs at the city’s baseball and soccer complex;

• A recommendation to waive the city’s golf cart registration requirements for the Tour de Georgia so others can operate their carts in the city during the event; and

• A proposal to allow alcohol to be served at City Hall Plaza for a Tour de Georgia VIP event.
