DA: April Ulrich sent letters from jail to victim’s family

A woman accused of killing her ex-husband at an office in Peachtree City in October will be evaluated by mental counselors before the criminal case against her proceeds.

Questions have been raised in evidence presented to Fayette County Superior Court over April Ulrich’s mental capacity, according to an court order that authorized the mental evaluation. The order did not specifically list the concerns that have been raised.

April Ulrich is charged with the shooting death of her ex-husband, Eric Ulrich. Police said she shot her husband after asking him to come out to the parking lot on the NCR campus. Police recovered a .38-caliber handgun that was used in the shooting, and she fired the shots at Eric Ulrich while the gun was concealed in a bag, police said.

Police have said the dispute between the former couple may have been over matters involving their young daughter, Nici, who was living with Eric Ulrich in Peachtree City at the time of the shooting.

Since her arrest, April Ulrich has written several letters to Eric Ulrich’s family members, in large part inquiring about Nici’s welfare, according to court documents.

The Fayette County District Attorney’s office has requested a protective order to stop April Ulrich from mailing the letters, some of which went to Eric Ulrich’s girlfriend, Ling Zhang of Alpharetta, according to court filings.

In one of the letters used as an example in the DA’s petition for the protective order, Ulrich shares several concerns about Nici and she also indicates that Nici is not safe around Zhang.

Ulrich is being represented by defense attorney George Weldon of the Fayette County Public Defender’s Office.
