Young Scientists Showcase Experiments

The effects of herbs on bacteria, free radicals and DNA fruit extraction are just some of the examples of experiments conducted by Fayette’s budding young scientists at the 2007 Fayette County Science and Engineering Fair.

Students from middle and high schools across the county submitted projects for the fair. A total of 28 projects were awarded first place and will now advance to the Griffin Regional Science and Engineering Fair scheduled for March 1 at the University of Georgia Experimental Center in Griffin.

Students entered projects individually or as teams. Middle school team winners advancing to the regional fair are (J.C. Booth) Jackie Roshelli, Larissa Romanow and Courtney Stone; David James and Justin Durden; Shannon Smith and Nicole Kawahata; (Flat Rock) Poonim Daya and Camara Carter, Mitchell Watson, Andrew Griffith and Jake Hancock; (Rising Starr) Alex Amalfitano and Will Martin; Justin Buchanan and Shawn McVicker; Kathryn Clark and Kati Valli; (Whitewater) Jessica Heimann, Ashley Hughes and Allison Maloney.

Middle school individual winners going to regionals are (J.C. Booth) Karen Anderson, Zenia Zheng and Brahma Natarajan, (Flat Rock) Ricky Rojas, Sarika Reddy, Omar Martinez and Malika Reddy, (Rising Starr) Rebekah Livingston.

High school first place team winners heading for the regional competition are (Fayette County) Christian Concepcion and Asad Abdulla; Sonika Reddy and Sonya Jooma; (McIntosh) Emma Kearney and Will Kearney.

High school individual winners advancing to the regional level are (Fayette County) Stefan Coburn and Jennie Lee, (Starr’s Mill) Emilia Amalfitano, Chris Eckhardt, Brein Millea, Allison Williams and Katie Runyan, (Whitewater) John Grimes.

A special award from the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association, Atlanta Chapter, was presented to Christian Concepcion and Asad Abdulla of Fayette County High.

Sponsors for the 2007 Fayette County Science and Engineering Fair are Integrated Science and Engineering, Capital Microscopes, Georgia Specialty Equipment, LLC, Fisher Scientific, Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (Atlanta Chapter) and Fayette County Association of Educators.
