The Fayette Democratic Women will host Ms. Sonja Strickland, Executive Director-Promise Place February 10. The brunch will be held at Right on Thyme restaurant in Fayetteville. The brunch will begin at 10 a.m. Promise Place, formerly known as The Fayette County Council on Domestic Violence, was established in 1989 as a private 501(c)3 nonprofit organization to serve domestic violence victims and their families in the Griffin Judicial circuit, including Fayette, Spalding, Pike, and Upson Counties. Services for children were added in 1996. Promise Place is a non-governmental agency and is the sole provider of comprehensive services to adult victims of domestic violence and sexual assault within the Griffin Judicial circuit, which includes Fayette, Spalding, Pike, and Upson Counties. Over the past 18 years, Promise Place has grown from a small, grassroots organization to an active, community recognized agency with five paid staff members and over 50 active volunteers. Annual health care costs of treatment of injuries due to domestic violence are estimated to be between five and ten billion dollars. Four and a half billion dollars are lost nationally in time domestic violence victims miss due to injuries. Children in homes where domestic violence occurs are physically abused or neglected at a rate of 150% higher than the national average. Promise Place provides the communities they serve with: counseling; a 24-hour hotline; case management; community outreach; children's counseling; a transitional residence; date violence education; legal advocacy and assistance; domestic violence response team; emergency food and transportation; group counseling for victims and abusers; individual counseling for victims & abusers; and partners with the Fayette County Law Enforcement. Ms. Strickland will address the group, providing more information about Promise Place’s services and volunteer opportunities. More information about Promise Place can be found at www.promiseplace.org. The Fayette Democratic Women invites women interested in this important community issue to attend this special event. The Fayette Democratic Women meet on the second Saturday of each month. login to post comments |
