Rockaway, MacDuff talks stall as political winds shift in PTCFri, 11/25/2005 - 9:28am
By: John Munford
Talks with a landowner in south Peachtree City that could lead to the realignment of Rockaway Road with the traffic light for Holly Grove Road are on hold until after the election, Mayor Steve Brown reported. On January 1, two new city council members will be sworn in, and if Brown loses to Harold Logsdon in the Dec. 6 runoff election that would mean a third newcomer to council. Those council members, Stephen Boone and Cyndi Plunkett, may or may not agree with the direction the current council has taken on the matter, Brown said Tuesday morning. The same status can be said for the annexation proposal from John Wieland Homes, which is seeking 360 homes on 360 acres in the northwest quadrant of the city just north of the current Centennial subdivision. The annexation is seen as necessary by some so MacDuff Parkway can be extended to connect with Ga. Highway 74; currently MacDuff is only accessible from Ga. Highway 54, which is often clogged with vehicles during morning and afternoon drive time. Opponents of the annexation argue that the Fayette County Commission successfully fought a court battle to preserve its zoning of lots with a minimum size of two acres. The suit was unsuccessfully brought by Pathway Communities, which later sold the property to Wieland. Brown proposed the annexation to Wieland just as the company had submitted a plan to the county which would have MacDuff Parkway circle around. To connect with the highway, an at-grade railroad crossing at the least will be necessary. The city’s transportation consulting firm has recommended that the at-grade crossing be constructed along with a bridge further to the north that would cross over the railroad tracks. login to post comments |
