Winter may be in full swing, but area high schools are gearing up for spring with fund raisers of all shapes and sizes. Some of the events have been around for just a few years while one has been an annual event for over two decades!

Mr. and Miss FCHS Talent Contest

Fayette County High School will present the annual Mr. and Miss FCHS talent contest on Thursday, Feb. 1 at 7:30 p.m.

This successful talent show, held at Sam’s Auditorium, allows students to perform with their peers while competing for the title of Mr. or Miss FCHS. Contestants become eligible to compete through auditions held prior to the night of the show.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to see various talents such as singing, playing instruments, dancing and much more. Tickets may be purchased in advance for $5 or at the door for $7. To purchase tickets, contact any Select Chorus member or contact Keena Redding Hunt, associate choral director at 770-460-3540 ext. 178. Advance tickets are also available at the FCHS front office.

Proceeds from this event will help fund the Select Chorus concert tour to New York City set for Feb. 14-18. Come show your support for the talented students from Fayette County High School.

Miss Sandy Creek Pageant

This year’s Miss Sandy Creek Pageant will be held on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 7:30 p.m. at Patriot Hall at Sandy Creek High School in Tyrone.

The pageant is hosted by the Sandy Creek Choral department and all proceeds will benefit the choral program. Various local businesses contribute the prizes and honorariums for the winners and the officials who donate their time to the production.

The pageant is open to all Sandy Creek female students and many are nominated by school clubs or school affiliated activities. The contestants are then sponsored by family, friends, clubs and local businesses. Judging is based on teacher recommendations, personal interviews with each judge and the evening gown competition that evening.

A highlight of the pageant will be the tuxedo fashion show featuring members of the Men’s Chorus modeling the latest prom styles.

The pageant is open to the public and tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door.

Miss Starr’s Mill Pageant

The Miss Starr’s Mill High School Scholarship Pageant will be held Feb. 8-10 at Willie Duke Auditorium at Starr’s Mill High School.

Twenty-six students will vie for more than $5,000 in college scholarships, competing in talent, judges’ interview, evening wear and casual attire.

Now in its sixth year, the Miss Starr’s Mill Pageant is the largest high school scholarship pageant in the country, according to drama department chairperson David Spearman.

Contestants are awarded points based on a personal interview, worth 35 points; talent, worth 35 points; evening wear, worth 15 points; and casual wear, worth 15 points.

The drama department produces the pageant to fund its plays and musicals.

The event starts at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The pageant is open to the public; tickets are $7 each night or $15 for a three-night pass purchased at the door. Proceeds help fund the drama department’s plays and musicals. For information, call 770-486-2710.

Instant Replay/Fashionata '07

The second annual Instant Replay formal wear consignment sale and the third annual formal wear fashion show, Fashionata '07, are planned for Feb. 10 at Peachtree City United Methodist Church’s Youth Annex in Peachtree City.

At Instant Replay, consigned evening-wear and accessories will be featured. Prices will be greatly reduced from retail and all clothing will be top quality. Consignors will set the price of their own merchandise and will receive 75 percent of the sale of their items. The merchandise drop-off date is Thursday, Feb. 8 between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.

The McIntosh PTSO will sponsor the Fashionata '07 event themed, “Scene at the Oscars," the same morning at 10:30 a.m. also at the PTCUMC Windgate Campus.

The event is a critical fund raising opportunity for the students of the Parent Teacher Student Organization to be able to raise money to fund school initiatives. Last year, the students decided to fund an extreme makeover on the school’s courtyard and raised $5,000 at Fashionata ‘06 (which was added to a $25,000 donation from a local resident) to complete the project.

Tickets are $15 and are available for purchase in the office at McIntosh High School in advance. Tickets will not be available at the door. Call 770-631-3232 for more information.
