Local basketball teams are aiming highWed, 01/31/2007 - 9:33am

It is getting to be crunch time in the high school basketball season and some local teams are stepping up to the challenge and playing some great ball. Fayette County’s boys moved into first place in region 2-AAAA with a 67-63 win over Westlake on Friday. The Tigers (16-5, 11-2 region) got 28 points from Noel Johnson and 15 points from Brandon Boykin in the win. It was their fourth win in a row and with four games remaining in the regular season, only one, a game with Whitewater, is against a team with a winning region record. The Lady Tigers (13-6, 10-3 region) fell to Westlake 50-38. Tessah Holt led Fayette County with 18 points while Kristene Walker added 13 points. Fayette County played at Northgate last night after the paper went to press and will host East Coweta, a non-region opponent, on Friday. The Fayette boys’ move to first was also made possible by Whitewater’s 71-67 win over Creekside. The Wildcats (13-8, 7-5 region) had four players in double digits; Jay Bright with 16 points, Trey Scales with 14, Zach Scurry with 13 points and 11 rebounds and Willie Reese with 10 points and five steals. The Lady Wildcats (3-18, 1-11 region) fell to Creekside 61-43. It was the team’s sixth loss in a row. Whitewater hosted Woodward Academy last night and will host Westlake on Friday. McIntosh’s boys and girls swept Starr’s Mill on Friday and split with Hiram on Saturday. The Lady Chiefs (14-7, 8-5 region) beat the Lady Panthers 48-40 on Friday with Morgan McCrory leading the way with 14 points and four rebounds. Elyse Chubb scored 12 points and added eight rebounds. Catherine Sanders led Starr’s Mill with 10 points, while Alexis Shaffer and Marissa Ring each had eight. On Saturday, McIntosh beat Hiram 47-27 for their fourth win in a row. Erin Justice scored 17 points, Olivia Tucker added 12 and Alex Smith scored six points and pulled in seven rebounds. Starr’s Mill faced Westlake on Saturday and lost 55-38. Shaffer scored 14 points and Sanders added nine. On the boys’ side, the Chiefs (9-12, 6-7 region) beat the Panthers 38-32 on Friday and fell to Hiram 60-46 on Saturday. Starr’s Mill (1-19,0-11 region) faced Westlake on Saturday and lost 68-23. Paul Vogel scored 11 points for Starr’s Mill in the loss to McIntosh and 10 points against Westlake. Starr’s Mill hosted Creekside last night and will play at Woodward Academy on Friday. McIntosh will play at Creekside on Friday. In 6-AAA, Sandy Creek’s boys (15-5, 7-3 region) picked up two more wins, beating Carrollton 71-68 and Banneker, a non-region opponent, 86-77. The Patriots are currently in third place in the region but have given the first place team, Carrollton, both their region losses this season. The Lady Patriots (17-3, 8-2 region) lost to Carrollton 40-32 on Friday before bouncing back with a 47-41 win on Saturday. The loss on Friday snapped an eight game winning streak. Sandy Creek’s girls are second in the region behind Carrollton. Sandy Creek played at Cass last night and they will play at Haralson County on Friday. Landmark played at Our Lady of Mercy last night and will host Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy on Friday. Our Lady of Mercy’s boys (15-6, 4-5 region) lost to Whitefield Academy 80-30 on Friday and beat W.D. Mohammed 76-64 on Saturday. On Saturday, they defeated W.D. Mohammed 55-47. Kelly Tolcher scored 16 points and pulled in 11 rebounds, while Raven Moore added 14 points, seven assists and four steals and Alex Miles added 12 points and 11 rebounds. Our Lady of Mercy will play at Greenforest Christian on Friday. login to post comments |
