The area 2-AAAA wrestling tournament begins a week from Friday and local teams are trying to get their teams ready for what is sure to be a grueling weekend. Last weekend, Fayette County wrestled at North Hall High School, while Whitewater and McIntosh wrestled at East Paulding High School.

The Fayette County High School Tiger wrestling team finished fourth in the North Hall tournament last weekend. The top three teams were North Gwinnett, Brookwood and Cherokee and there were 16 teams in all. Champions of their weight class were Audy Whittington, 171 and Patrick Blankenbeker, 189. Brian Tilton, 160 finished in second place while Sam Law, 152 finished third. Jonathan West , 135, and Ali Khan, 103, both placed fourth. Dylan Tanner, 130 and Brandon Singleton, 145, finished fifth and Austin Vorwald, 125, placed sixth.

The team’s next competition is today at Hiram against Hiram & Mt. Zion.

The Whitewater Wildcats and McIntosh Chiefs wrestling teams competed in the 18 team Crossbone Classic at East Paulding High School this past weekend. Whitewater had six medalists and McIntosh went home with five medalists.
Whitewater placed second overall. Their top finishers were Chase Penland, 140, first; Jordan Strain, 152, first; Zac Williamson, 215, second; Jake Huddleston, 135, third; Kenny Kellerman, 145, third and Jake Griffin, 171, fourth.

Whitewater will wrestle at South Cobb this afternoon and will wrestle Chapel Hill, Creekview and Woodland at Woodland on Friday.

The Chiefs were led by tournament champion Matt Carroll in the 215 lb weight class. Jarrod Chamblee placed fifth at 112 lbs and three Chiefs took sixth, Richard Hughes 119, Jesse Toscanno 135 and Jacob Worthington 171lbs.

“I am very excited for Matt and all of our medalists,” said Coach Nick Bellantoni. “This was Matt’s first tournament competition in a few weeks after recovering from an ankle injury. We went into the tournament a bit short-handed as three of our regular varsity wrestlers were out of action due to injury and illness. So, having five out of 12 wrestlers medal is a good result.

The Chiefs wrestled at Stockbridge High School last night against Stockbridge, the number one in team in AAAA, and Eastside, the number two team. They will host Our Lady of Mercy and Mundy’s Mill on Friday at 5 p.m.

Starr’s Mill will wrestle in the North Metro Invitational at Brookwood on Fiday and Saturday.
