• On Sunday, Jan. 7, Christian Taylor, a junior at Sandy Creek High School, won the triple jump event, jumping his personal best 48.02” at the Ed Temple Classic at Tennessee State University in Nashville.

Taylor was the only high school participant in this event and his performance outranked collegiate participants from Morehouse College, Tennessee State, Fisk and Jackson State Universities. He placed sixth in the Men’s 400 meter dash in a field of 40 competitors. Taylor was particularly pleased with his performance and thanks his coaches at Quick Silver Track Club for their commitment. As he says, “each week training seems to be more and more demanding but the end results are very rewarding..winning is fun!”

Taylor trains with QuickSilver Track Club during the summer and indoor track seasons. In preparation for this track meet, he continued his training at the Garrison Savannah, the national horse-racing track while he vacationed with his family during the Christmas break in Barbados, West Indies.

• Justin Murray, a student at Fayette Middle School, placed second in the 12-13 year old boys division at the national finals of the NFL Punt, Pass and Kick. Murray had a punt of 111’8”, a pass of 136’3” and a kick of 63’9”. Murray was one of 32 students in the nation ot make the finals which took place in New Orleans on Jan. 13.

• Fayetteville’s Grace Christian Academy boys varsity basketball team clinched the Georgia Christian Athletic Association (GCAA) Class A Region III title on Thursday with a win over Grace Christian of Columbus, 58-44. This is Grace Christian Academy’s second year with a varsity team and the first year with seniors.
With the win, the Eagles improved their record to 10-2 in the region and 13-3 overall and secured home court advantage in the first round of the GCAA playoffs. The playoffs begin on Friday, Feb. 2.

The leading scorer in the game was junior Uche Uzodinma with 16 points. Senior Terry Davis contributed 11 points. Grace outscored Columbus 25-10 in the final quarter to clinch the victory.
