Helicopter helps apprehend man who fled traffic stop

Sheriff’s deputies caught a man who bolted on foot early Tuesday afternoon after he was pulled over for a traffic stop, police said.

The suspect, whose name was not available at press time Tuesday, bolted from his car in the area of Patriots Walk and Helmer Way. Although he became obscured in a wooded area, the suspect was spotted minutes later by Hawk 1, the sheriff’s department’s helicopter unit.

The suspect had traversed several creeks in a bid to avoid police and at one time he was hiding under a pile of debris, according to radio transmissions from Hawk 1. He was apprehended near a home on Bay Ridge Drive.

It took about 15 minutes for the suspect to be apprehended starting from the time he ran away.

Charges against the suspect were not available at press time.

The Clayton County Police Department assisted in the operation, deputies said.
