Welcome Center is a hitTue, 01/30/2007 - 4:34pm

Traffic has been heavy at Fayette County School’s new Welcome Center since its official opening January 3. The center, which serves as a centralized location for new families to register their children for school, enrolled over 300 students during the first two weeks of January. On average, the center registered 41 students per day with an approximate wait time of 45 minutes. Prior to the opening of the center, parents had to go to the individual schools to register. Not only did this create a long wait at the schools during heavy enrollment periods (the weeks leading up to the first day of school in the fall and after the first of the calendar year) but it also meant that parents with students at various school levels had to travel to several different schools to register all of their children. The opening of the Welcome Center has streamlined the enrollment process allowing registrations to be completed in one location for all schools. Only kindergarten registration is handled at the school level due to assessment testing. “We have had nothing but wonderful comments from families about our new centralized registration at the Welcome Center,” says C.W. Campbell, coordinator of safety, discipline and athletics. Since operations at the center have been flowing smoothly, an appointment is no longer recommended to register a student as long as parents have all of the necessary documentation needed for enrollment. A list of these documents can be found on the school system’s website, www.fcboe.org, or call 770-460-3990, ext. 450. Adding to the convenience of the center, the school system’s residency officer and ESOL specialist are on staff to assist with affidavits and help communicate with parents and students of different language, respectively. In addition to enrolling students, the Welcome Center also houses student records and high school graduation transcripts. A transcript form can be download from the school system’s website. Current hours for the center are 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday. The facility is located at the LaFayette Educational Center, 205 LaFayette Avenue, Fayetteville. login to post comments |
