Annual event held this weekend

It’s what many call the “premier mid-winter social event" in Peachtree City, and this weekend neighbors, friends and families will come together to eat, talk and laugh at the Kiwanis Club of Peachtree City’s 15th annual Pancake Saturday.

The all-you-can-eat meal will be served in the McIntosh High School cafeteria on Walt Banks Road in Peachtree City from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m. The menu consists of fluffy pancakes, tasty sausage, orange juice, milk, coffee and tea.

Tickets are $4 per person and can be purchased in advance from any Peachtree City Kiwanis member or at the door. Take out orders are available for people on their way to work or just in a hurry.

Family entertainment will abound as kids can enjoy free face-painting, balloon art and antics, pancake eating contests and a strolling barbershop quartet. The event would not be complete, however, without the "Clowns With New Hope," a ministry of New Hope Baptist Church in Fayetteville.

Local business owners are encouraged to pre-purchase tickets for their customers and loyal employees. Members representing other Kiwanis Clubs and other community service organizations in Fayette, Coweta, and other surrounding counties are also encouraged to attend.

Last year the club set a goal to feed 3,000 hungry customers and reached their goal, setting a record for the largest attendance in the breakfast’s 14 year history. This year Peachtree City Kiwanian Dan Nelson stated the club is “hoping to serve about 3,200 this year.” Last year’s breakfast raised about $8,000, after expenditures, to go toward the local projects Kiwanis serves.

All Kiwanis proceeds are returned to the community through service projects and charitable donations. “One of the things we spend a great deal of money on is the D.A.R.E. program,” Nelson stated. “We are the sole sponsors of the program in Peachtree City.”

The Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program serves six elementary schools in Peachtree City with specially trained Peachtree City Police officers educating approximately 500 fifth graders each year on the dangers of drug use. The Peachtree City Kiwanis Club donates $5,000 each year to support this program.

Other projects that receive funding from the club include the annual art and talent showcase, two high school Key Clubs, the first ever K Kids club at Peeples Elementary and many other projects.
