Teams battle in big region contests

As the end of January looms large, pointing towards the end of the regular season of high school basketball and the all important post season tournaments, teams continue to shoot for region wins and either solidify or advance their position in the region standings.

Fayette County’s boys and girls each handed the teams from Creekside a loss. The boys (14-5, 9-2 region), still smarting from a one point loss to the Seminoles not that long ago, won 79-75 with 23 points coming from Quincy Carruthers, 21 points coming from Noel Johnson and 11 points from Terrance Turner. The Lady Tigers (13-4, 10-1 region) won 52-47 with Chasity Welch and Kristene Walker both scoring 14 points.

Fayette County played at Woodward Academy last night and will host Westlake on Friday.
McIntosh’s boys and girls both got region wins by defeating teams from Banneker. The boys (7-11, 4-7 region) won 66-62 in overtime with Vaughn Page scoring 17 points and Jeremy Lampkin adding 16. The girls (11-7, 6-5 region) won 48-32. Elyse Chubb scored 17 points and pulled in eight rebounds for McIntosh and Erin Justice added 13 points and five rebounds.

McIntosh played at Whitewater last night and will host Starr’s Mill on Friday before hitting the road to take on Hiram on Saturday.
Whitewater’s boys and girls faced Starr’s Mill on Friday and Landmark Christian on Saturday. The boys (12-7, 6-4 region) won both games, beating Starr’s Mill 66-51 and defeating Landmark 64-55. Against Starr’s Mill, Trey Scales scored 15 points, Zach Scurry chipped in 14 points and 10 rebounds and Willie Reese added 10 points. In the win over Landmark, Jay Bright had 18 points and seven assists, while Stephen Sargent had 12 points and 14 rebounds. Scurry added 12 points and eight rebounds.

The Lady Wildcats (3-16, 1-9 region) fell to Starr’s Mill (8-11, 4-6 region) 52-33 and lost to Landmark 55-26. Starr’s Mill was led by Alexis Shaffer who had 13 points. Marie Jubb added nine points and both Catherine Sanders and Tempest Ponds scored eight.

Whitewater will play at Creekside on Friday.
Landmark Christian’s Lady War Eagles (18-2, 6-1 region) are still ranked first in Class A according to the most recent GaSports.com coaches poll. In their win over Whitewater, Christian Hunnicutt scored 30 points and pulled in 12 rebounds. Hunnicutt has now scored over 1,000 points in her career at Landmark. Her sister, Diamond, added 10 points and seven rebounds in the win. On Friday, the Lady War Eagles defeated Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy 49-29. Christian Hunnicutt had 16 points and 10 rebounds and Diamond scored 13 points and nine rebounds.

The Landmark boys (4-14, 3-4 region) defeated the Chargers of Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy 51-36. Landmark faced Greenforest Christian last night and will host W.D. Mohammed on Friday.

Sandy Creek’s boys and girls picked up region wins over Cartersville over the weekend. The girls (15-2, 7-1 region), ranked ninth in Class AAA in the GaSports.com coaches poll, won 50-49. It was their seventh win in a row. The boys (13-4, 6-2 region) won 78-66. They have won six games in a row. Sandy Creek played at Cedartown last night and will host Carrollton on Friday and Banneker on Saturday.

Our Lady of Mercy’s boys and girls had opposite weekends. The boys (13-5, 3-4 region) got two region wins, beating Fellowship Christian 69-49 and Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy 64-63. The girls (10-8 3-4 region) lost to Fellowship 30-26 with Alex Miles scoring 10 points and recording 10 rebounds. The Lady Bobcats fell to the Lady Chargers 44-38 with Raven Moore scoring 16 points.

Our Lady of Mercy played Galloway last night. They will play at Whitefield Academy on Friday and will host W.D. Mohmammed on Saturday.
