Fayetteville police are working to arrest a city resident after a shooting that began with a confrontation over a business dispute Sunday afternoon, police said.

Frederick M. Hurt is accused of shooting at one of his business partners after the partner, Ralph Smith of Jonesboro, said he was going to authorities to report that Hurt improperly purchased a vehicle and secured credit in the business’ name, said Det. Steve Crawshaw of the Fayetteville Police Department.

The shooting occurred in the vacant Legends of Redwine subdivision off Redwine Road as Smith tried to turn around in a cul-de-sac to avoid Hurt when Hurt opened fire on Smith and a passenger in his car, police said.

No one was injured, police added.

The incident began minutes before, when Smith saw Hurt’s vehicle and followed him, stopping to confront Hurt about the business transactions and saying he was going to report them to police, Crawshaw said. Smith then left the area and Hurt followed him into the vacant subdivision, Crawshaw said.

Hurt faces two counts of aggravated assault and one count each of criminal damage to property, pointing a pistol at another person and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, Crawshaw said, adding Tuesday afternoon that police hoped to arrest Hurt soon.
